Inside the mirror
Inside the Mirror is a photographic art series focusing on the female body, self-image and insecurity. This series explores the relationship between female identity and self-image through a series of lens-based images. This series was driven by my own insecurities and discomfort with body image. Growing up I was bombarded with an overwhelming amount of media focused around the female body. Everywhere you looked there were images of the perfect woman, with the perfect body, women I never felt I could be. What I saw in magazines and on TV and what I saw in a mirror was never the same. This led to a discomfort when it came to my self-image, and ultimately an uneasiness and resentment of mirrors.
Inside the Mirror takes a critical look at the culture surrounding female body image. With this series, I wanted to create a confined and restricting atmosphere within the images to speak to my uneasiness within the plane of a mirror. Similarly, I focused on the use of distortion and abstraction to represent feelings of insecurity and anxiety.
